Chapter 8

Steph couldn’t sleep that night. She had too much on her mind. About an hour after Richie left, she got a text from Jon asking if she was still up, and still had company. She wrote back that she was up.

“Good,” Came the reply from him. “Come on over and hang with me. I can’t sleep.”

She just got up and walked over to the adjoining door and knocked.

“It’s open,” he called out softly.

Steph opened the door and walked in. “Hey…sorry about earlier. You know Richie. Worst timing ever.”

“I’m over it. Wanna watch a movie?” He asked.

“Sure,” she said. “Do you want me to grab some snacks and drinks?”

“Only if you’re hungry. I had a salad earlier while you were with Richie.”

“I’m good. So what are we watching tonight?”

“Classic horror,” he replied with a grin, holding up Amityville Horror.

“Ok,” she said, as he popped the DVD in.

“You ok with scary? I think this is one of the scariest movies of all times.”

“Scary is good. You may see me jump a little or cover my eyes at the really scary parts,” she said, “I’ve never seen this one.”

“Ooh goodie,” he said. “You my lady are in for a treat. But you definitely want to sit on the bed with me for the movie if you’re going to be a jumper or hide your eyes.”

“Okay,” she said, sitting down next to him on the bed about as far as she could get from him. “You know if you can’t sleep I don’t think watching a really scary movie is all that helpful in trying to sleep.”

“Well, I’ve been tossing and turning for a while. I don’t sleep much when we’re travelling. Neither does Richie. We’re both night owls.”

“Me too, but I have all kinds of makeup tricks that I’m going to have to use in the morning to hide the bags under my eyes.”

Jon smiled. “I don’t think in the last few weeks I’ve seen you with bags under your eyes at all, and there have been a lot of late nights.”

“That’s because I hide them well and I get up before you.”

“Good point,” he said.

“Yup, I’m always right. You need to learn this about me.”

“Whatever,” he said. “Now shh…previews are over. Movie time.”

About 15 minutes into the movie, Steph was already good and scared. She’d never get any sleep tonight. But she couldn’t take her eyes off the screen, so that was a good thing.

“Scared,” Jon whispered to her, and she nearly jumped a mile.

“No,” she whispered back. “I’m good.”

“Liar.” He said stifling back a laugh. “You can come snuggle with me instead of sitting so far from me. I know it’s a big bed, but do I have cooties or something?”

“Am good,” she said. She wanted to snuggle up next to him, but it probably wasn’t a good idea. She did move a little closer to him on the bed though. The movie continued, and true to his word, was one of the scariest movies she had ever seen. She was terrified watching the movie, and almost forgot Jon was sitting next to her, until one part made her jump and she flew into his arms.

He let out a little chuckle. “Scaredey cat.”

“Fine,” she said smiling, “I admit it.” She started to pull herself out of his arms. He pulled her back to him.

“Stay here,” he said softly smiling. “I’ll keep you safe from the scary movie. Besides there’s at least a couple of times where you will jump again. At least here, you’re comfortable.”

She sighed. He certainly was impossible to resist, and she was starting to wonder why she was anymore. “Ok,” she said leaning back against him with her head resting on his chest, as his arms wrapped tightly around her. They watched the rest of the movie for the most part in silence. Every time there was a particularly scary part where she’d jump, he’d hold her a little tighter.

The credits began to roll and Steph sat up and stretched yawning sleepily. Jon laughed.

“And I thought you said you definitely wouldn’t be sleeping tonight.”

“I probably won’t be able to,” she said, “But I should get back to my room and try to get some sleep, and so should you. You do have a couple of things lined up in the afternoon before we have to be at the arena. And I imagine you’ll want to get in a workout in the morning.”

“You’re right,” he said feeling somewhat disappointed that she was leaving him to go back to her room. “Leave the doors to the rooms open.”

“Why?” she asked.

“In case I have a nightmare,” he teased. “I might need you to come back over here and keep me safe.”

She picked up a pillow off of his bed and threw it at him. “Dork.”

He pretended to pout.

“Don’t give me that look,” she said. “I know that look. I invented that look. It doesn’t work.”

He grinned. “Damn. And here I thought being older than you, I invented it.”

“Nope. Women start using that look when they’re born. You probably didn’t start using that until you were at least twenty, so I invented that look.”

He laughed. “Good point. You win.”

“I always do,” she said. “Now get some sleep.”

“Ok…is it part of my PA’s job to tuck me in?”

“You’re a big boy. I think you can handle it. Good night Jon,” she said walking back to her room and leaving the connecting doors open.

“Good night beautiful!” he said back to her from his bed. She walked over and pulled down the covers and crawled in and was soon fast asleep.

Steph was dreaming. More having a nightmare. But it had nothing to do with the movie.

She had just walked into her apartment in Connecticut where he was waiting for her. It had been a really long day at work and all she wanted to do was crawl into bed, she knew from his icy look when she came in and turned on the lights that wouldn’t be possible that night. She prayed that the evening would be over quickly and she wouldn’t have to deal with too much.

“Where have you been bitch?” he said, clearly drunk.

“I just got home from work. It’s been a really long day and I’m exhausted. Can I just go to sleep?” She headed towards the stairs hoping to get away, but he was on his feet and grabbed a hold of her.

“I bet you’re lying,” he said viciously.

“Please,” she said, knowing it wouldn’t make a difference, “You’re hurting me.”

“Then don’t lie to me. Tell me where you were.”

“I told you. I was working. I had a project to do for my boss and had to stay late.”

“Bull shit,” he said slapping her to the ground. “You shouldn’t lie to me.” He hit her a few more times and she just kept crying to please stop. Finally he got tired of her and left her on the floor while he went upstairs and passed out….

Meanwhile, Jon awoke with a start to hearing Steph over in her room in her sleep. She was clearly having a bad dream. He ran over there and gently put his arms around her. This was no dream about the movie. He hadn’t heard her have a nightmare once in the last few weeks, but this one sounded like a bad one. He wasn’t sure if he should wake her.

“No,” she mumbled in her sleep. “Please. Stop.”

He could see tears on her cheeks, and gently brushed a hair back from her head and kissed her softly on her forehead. “Hey,” he said softly. “Wake up. You’re having a bad dream.”

She rolled over, and mumbled to stop again.

“Shh,” he said cradling her in his arms, “It’s just a dream Steph. It’s not real. You’re safe here.”

All of a sudden she jolted awake screaming no as she sat up in bed and looked around in the dark, and breathed out a sigh of relief. It had just been a dream. It had been a while since she had had one of those dreams. Must have been the movie-even though it wasn’t really violent, it probably triggered the part of my brain that has nightmares.

She shivered. She hated those dreams. They were all too real to her.

“Now, do you want to talk about what happened with you and your ex?” Jon said softly from next to her startling her.

“What are you doing here?” she said.

“You were having a bad dream and that clearly was not about the movie,” he said. “I was worried so I came over here.”

He was so sweet to her. “I’m not really ready to talk about it,” she said, “I think maybe the movie triggered the part of my brain that has nightmares and unfortunately when I have a nightmare they’re always variations of the same one. It’s been a while. I thought they were finally going away.”

“No more late night scary movies,” he said softly. ‘I promise.”

She smiled at him. “It’s all your fault.”

“I’ll take the blame now. If I had known....but I’m not going anywhere for the rest of the night. I’m staying right here with you. I don’t want to hear any buts about it either.”

She still felt a little shaky from her nightmare and was too exhausted to argue with him. She nodded. “Thank you.” She said and snuggled into his comforting arms, and within about ten minutes they were both sleeping soundly. There were no more nightmares that evening and they both slept comfortably. Around 930 the next morning a loud knock came on her door.

“Room service!” a loud voice boomed.

Steph groaned at the persistent knocking. Jon was sleeping right through it. Light sleeper my ass, she thought. I’m going to kill whichever one of the guys this is. She gently took herself out from Jon’s arms who only stirred slightly and rolled over and hugged her pillow, and continued to sleep. She smiled and walked over to the door, and opened it slightly to see Richie, Tico and David standing on the other side of the door.

“Morning sunshine! We wanted to play today,” Tico said with a grin.

“Assholes. All of you. This is so not right. Why can’t a girl who has nothing to do in the morning sleep late?”

“Too late,” David teased, “We’re up now. That means you are. Oh wait, is Jon actually still asleep?”

“Yes,” she hissed, “And so was I. Apparently I’m awake now.”

“Sorry,” Richie said with a grin, peering around her shoulder. “We couldn’t resist, but it looks like someone followed my advice last night.”

She grabbed her key off the table by the door and stepped out in the hallway closing the door gently behind her. “Look you three, that wasn’t what it looks like. Please don’t start with the teasing this morning. It was a rough night and I’m exhausted.”

Richie saw from the bags under her eyes that she needed her rest.

“Ok,” Tico said softly. “We’ll leave you two lovebirds alone.”

“Teek!” David said.

Steph smiled. “It’s ok. Look, I’ll call you guys when he wakes up.”

“Ok,” Richie said smiling. “What time do we have to be downstairs by?”

“The car will be here at 3.” She said.

“Ok. We’ll see you then.”

“Bye guys.” She said gently opening her door.

He was still sound asleep hugging her pillow. Figuring she’d let him sleep for a little bit, she headed towards the shower. The feel of the hot shower felt great, and when she was done, she blow dried and fluffed her hair and carefully applied some make up. She walked out into her room and selected a pair of skinny jeans and a light blue tank top, and got dressed. She topped the outfit off with a pair of light blue strappy sandals, and looked in the mirror. She looked a thousand times better than the guys had seen her when they came knocking this morning. Smiling to herself, she decided to call room service for real. She knew Jon waned to eat light since he was going on stage and needed to keep his awesome figure so she ordered two veggie egg white omelets, along with a side of turkey bacon and fresh fruit and two bottles of water. She asked them to be delivered to Jon’s room in case he wasn’t awake when the breakfast arrived. She looked at him still asleep. She knew he was her boss and had quickly become her friend over the last couple of weeks-being thrown together constantly for work would either make you both want to kill or each other or be the best of friends. Fortunately with her working for him, he became her friend. She had to wonder if Richie was right. Were they developing feelings for each other? It was so complicated a situation for them to even think about having feelings for each other. He’s still married, she worked for him, and she had recently come off a bad relationship herself. She didn’t know if she was ready for anything yet. He is pretty amazing, she thought to herself, I know that I can wrap my head around the fact that he’s still married and the fact that we work for each other. But Richie was right. I’m not ready yet. It’s not fair to him for me to be snuggling up with him, and letting him kiss me. I’m only leading him on. We should definitely talk when he wakes up.

A sleepy voice interrupted her thoughts. “Why are you way over there little one?”

“Because,” she said “I’ve been up for about an hour and a half now.”

“Everything ok?” he asked gently.

Damn she thought. He just has to be extra sweet. “I’m good. I had a wake-up call from room service this morning.”

“Did you order breakfast last night for this morning?”

“Nope,” she said. “The guys thought it would be funny for all of them to come over and mess with me. They figured you’d be up. Breakfast, however, should be arriving momentarily.”

“Yay!” he said getting out of bed. “What did you order for this morning? I’m famished.”

“Veggie egg white omelet, turkey bacon, fruit and water.” She said.

“The perfect assistant. You make sure I’m fed , but fed right. I don’t know why you got all pretty. I plan on going to the gym and wanted you go come with me for a workout.”

“I have some things to take care of and wanted to do some shopping since I’m here in London. If that is alright with you. And do not give me the pout this morning,” she said.

He huffed. “Fine.”

“Hey….it’s my job to make sure take care of you. Let me.”

Then you should take me back to bed, he thought. But I can wait. I know she’s not ready yet. She probably thinks she’s leading me on. Maybe we should talk tonight. “How long do you have to do stuff for?”

“Just a few calls after breakfast. No more than an hour. I know we’re near all of the good shopping, so when I’m done I’ll have about two hours free to shop and then come back here and get everything ready for going over to the venue tonight.”

“How about, I go with you? I’ll only be a half hour at the gym and then a quick shower and we could go. I thought maybe we can talk…” He sounded awfully boyish and hopeful.

“I supposed a talk is a good idea.” She said thoughtfully. “How about we do that tonight after the show? You guys have a night off tomorrow, and I have nothing on the calendar for you tomorrow. So it can be a late night.”

“Ok,” he said thoughtfully. A knock on Jon’s door interrupted. It was room service for real.

Steph went and signed off on the breakfast and brought everything over and set it up on the table in Jon’s room.

“Before we talk tonight, though, I’m taking you out after the show,” Jon said, reaching in his wallet and pulling out some cash, and a credit card. Consider this a bonus. Buy yourself something special while shopping.”

“Jon,” she said, “You pay me plenty. This is too much.”

“Whatever,” he said, “I insist.”

She rolled her eyes at him. “Yes boss.”

“Great,” he said. “I’m glad that’s settled. Good call on the breakfast. This is awesome.”

They finished up the breakfast and Steph cleaned off the table and set the trays in the hallway for room service to take. Jon came out of his room dressed in shorts and a sleeveless t-shirt and sneakers ready for his run on the treadmill. Today was strictly a cardio day for him.

“Sure you don’t want to work out with me?”

She grinned. “Tomorrow afternoon. I promise. I could use a work out.”

He gave her a once over. “Not from what I can see you don’t.”

“Flattery will get you nowhere mister,” she said laughing as he walked out the door. “Jon! Wait!”

“Yes ma’am?” he said turning around.

She handed him a bottle of water and a towel. “Thought you might want those.”

“Thanks! See you in a few.”

“Bye.”

She closed the door and closed the adjoining doors to their two rooms. Within about five minutes, Richie was knocking at her door. She was already on the phone with the arena making sure everything was in order for the evening. She opened the door and waved Richie in, while still listening to the person at the other end of call. She was smiling and nodding. “Ok then. I think we’re good. Thank you.” With that she hung up the phone and turned to look at Richie who was grinning like a Cheshire cat at her. “What?”

“Nothing,” he said, “You’re very good at what you do.”

“Thanks, but if you want details on last night, there’s nothing to tell.”

Chapter 7

They got back to the hotel quickly. Steph said her goodnight to the guys and headed upstairs. She went into her room and turned on the tv and found an old movie on and changed into pajamas. She began to watch. A half an hour later her cell rang. She looked at the caller id.
“Hi Richie,” she said.
“Were you asleep?”
“No,” she said.
“Great. So can I come over?”
“Sure,” she said. “What did you want to do?”
“Hang out a little, talk, maybe get some soda. David and Tico went down the hotel restaurant and wanted me to join them, but I don’t think I’m quite ready for that scene yet. But none of us can ever sleep after a show. Jon’s probably in the gym right about now having a workout.”
Just then she heard a soft knock at her adjoining door.
“Nope…he’s knocking on my door,” Steph said, “But come on over anyway, and the three of us will hang.”
“Ok,” he said and hung up the phone.
She opened the door, and smiled at Jon. “Hi.”
“Sorry. Did I wake you?”
“Nope,” She said softly, “I was up.”
Then a knock came on her other door.
“Room service?” Jon asked.
“Nope,” she said opening the door with a smile, “Richie.”
Jon’s expression kind of hardened at the sight of Richie. Obviously they had planned to hang out. Relax. She promised him she’d be there for him if he was tempted to drink. This is our first night out, and she’s probably keeping him company so he doesn’t go down to the bar, he thought.
“So,” Richie asked with a grin. “Am I interrupting anything?”
Steph just smiled. “No, Richie. You were on the phone with me when Jon knocked on my door. I haven’t really found out why he’s here and what he needs.”
“Oh, I bet I know what he needs,” Richie said with a knowing smirk.
“Guys,” Jon said, “I’m sorry. I just wanted to talk with Steph about something, but clearly you two had plans. What I had can wait until morning. I think I’ll just hit the shower and go to bed.”
“But Jon-“ Steph protested.
“No,” he said. “It’s not a big deal. I’m tired. I’ll just head to bed and leave you two to hang. Steph, breakfast for nine tomorrow.”
“Ok,” she said softly walking over to him by his door and leaning in and whispering in his ear, “I’m sorry, but part of the condition for me getting your best friend back for you was to be there for him if he needs me and is tempted to drink. You can stay if you want.”
Jon sighed, “It’s ok. I’ll see you in the morning.”
He gently closed the adjoining door behind him.
“Hey lady,” Richie said. “I’m sorry. Clearly I have the worst timing.”
“What’s there to be sorry about?” Steph asked. “He said the work could wait.”
“Honey, if you think that man was here to work, then you’ve got another thing coming. He was clearly jealous of you hanging out with me.”
“Jealous?” Steph asked confused.
“Yes,” Richie said. “He likes you. A lot. You’re just what he needs,” Richie said.
“Well, that’s all well and good, but I don’t need that right now, and he’s my boss.”
“Darlin’ I know women, and I know women well. Jonny gets confused by you guys all of the time but I don’t. I’ve only found one woman in my whole life that I don’t get, and I won’t tell you what happened with her. You may not know it yet, but you like him too. A lot.”
“Rich I-“
“It’s ok. You can deny it. You’re not ready to admit your feelings to anyone yet. Because you’re not even ready to admit it to yourself yet. But from what I’ve seen of the two of you together, I can’t wait until you are ready to admit this, because you two would be absolutely amazing together. He’s always been a driven workaholic, and for the last few years, he’s been…well how can I put this nicely? I can’t. He’s been an absolute ass. But you. You’ve changed that. He’s mellowed in  the last few weeks. I’m pretty sure that is 100% you and what you do for him.”
“I’m glad I’ve helped him,” she said softly, “But Richie, I’ve been through so much. And I want to open up to him. I do. I’m just not ready yet.”
“You will be, and I will be so thrilled for you guys when it does happen.”
"Any particular reason why you're pushing this so hard?" she asked him.
"Just want to see him happy, that's all," Richie said casually, "Well darlin' thanks for the talk, but its getting late and you have to get up early for Jonny in the morning. Get some sleep."
"You're alright?" She asked.
"Yup. Am just going to make a phone call to someone back home and hit the sack. I just needed someone to hang with for a bit. Goodnight Steph," he said.
"Night Rich."
"Think about what I said, ok?"
She rolled her eyes. "Goodnight Richie!"
With that he left her to her thoughts.

Chapter 6

It's a long one...enjoy!
Jon just gave Richie a pointed look letting him know to back off. Once breakfast was cleaned up, Jon suggested they nap. It was after all the middle of the night in London where they were landing first, and it would probably be best if everyone arrived as much as London time as possible. Especially Steph who wasn’t used to travelling overseas.
“Ok,” David said, “Me, Teek and Richie will take the compartments on the back of the plane. That leaves the bed in the front and the couch for you two.”
“I’ll take the couch,” Jon and Steph said at the same time.
The guys started laughing. “It is a big bed,” Richie said. “Probably big enough for the two of you.”
Steph stifled a yawn, and Jon grinned. “Rich is right Steph. The couch is comfortable and all, but not for good sleep. And you should be plenty rested for tomorrow.”
“So should you,” she said.
“Then it’s settled. We’ll both take the bed,” Jon said.
“Just try to keep the noise level down. We don’t want the captain to get distracted by you two,” Richie said.
“Don’t worry Rich,” Steph replied sweetly. “Jon’s anti-snoring pillow is with me, and it works wonders at keeping him quiet.”
All of the guys laughed except for Jon who let out a little pout.
“Ok guys, let’s get some sleep,” Jon said seriously.
They all parted and went their separate ways.
They went into their room for the rest of the flight and Jon pulled back the covers, and patted the spot next to him. “Come here. There’s plenty of room.”
“But I’m not all that tired,” Steph said. “A little tired, but I don’t feel like I’ll fall asleep any time soon.”
Jon clicked a remote and a screen came down. “Well then my lady. We can watch a movie until you fall asleep. I hope you like classics. I’ve got the Wizard of Oz.”
“You never cease to amaze me with your movie choices,” she said crawling into the bed next to him and propping herself up on the pillows. “I love this movie.”
“I like to watch it when I’m travelling. So I can remember that there is no place like home.”
“You’re such a sap. Who knew that the serious workaholic I met a couple of weeks ago was really a down to earth sap?”
You bring out the fun in me. I’m able to relax and enjoy myself more because of you, he thought. “I do have a fun side. It’s just that I’m always working, and for the past few months, it seemed that the only ones who saw the fun side to me were the fans. I guess I forgot what it was like to just have fun.”
“Ok, let’s watch the movie now, mister,” she said handing him a pillow, “Oh and here’s your anti-snoring pillow.”
“I. Do. Not. Snore,” he said.
“Oh, we are so going to record you,” she said.
“The guys have,” he replied with a grin. “I just destroy the tapes so no one knows.”
About a half an hour into the movie Steph fell asleep. She rolled over and snuggled against Jon, who wrapped his arms around her and gently kissed her forehead.
“Sleep well my angel,” he whispered softly. Within about 15 minutes he was asleep as well. About six hours later, he awoke to discover that she was still sound asleep in his arms. He smiled at the sight. Her long wavy hair was fanned out around her and she had a peaceful smile on her face as she slept. He didn’t want to wake her so he stayed put. He figured she needed the sleep. After all for the last two weeks all she did was work, and there had been a lot of late nights. He heard a soft knock on the door. He figured Richie would be up first. He was like him and the two of them never slept that much on the planes.
“Come in,” he said softly, hoping he wouldn’t wake her. She didn’t even stir.
Richie walked in and looked at the two of them and almost burst out laughing. “So much for breakfast in bed every morning.”
“Nothing happened man. She fell asleep and this is how she ended up,” Jon protested.
“Ok,” he whispered, “Fine. Then how come you’re over there with your arms all wrapped around her?”
“Well, it’s kind of habit when a beautiful woman falls asleep in my arms, that I snuggle back and when I woke this way, I didn’t want to move. I don’t want to wake her up.”
“Does she even realize the effect she has on you?” Richie whispered. “You’ve been like a whole new man.”
“No,” Jon said, “And we’re not going to tell her yet. Christ Rich, I’ve only known the girl a couple of weeks.”
“She is like such a breath of fresh air,” Richie said. “For all of us.”
Richie’s phone vibrated at him. He read the message and smiled. He wrote back to the person on the other end, and quickly deleted the messages just in case someone saw his phone. The last thing he needed was Jon finding out what was going on with him. It would definitely put him back into the dark days. He knew that they were ready for the divorce, but he also didn’t want Jon to know anything until he felt just as happy as him. Otherwise, he’d think it were a huge betrayal.
“New girlfriend?” Jon whispered.
“Maybe,” he said softly. “We’ll see.”
“Who is she? And when do I get to approve of this girl?”
“Not for a while. Want to keep things under wraps for a while,” he whispered.
“Fine,” he whispered back, thinking it was probably time to wake the sleeping angel in his arms, he sighed.
“I’ll leave you to it so you can wake her,” Richie whispered and left the room.
A few minutes later, a voice came over the intercom doing the job of waking Steph for him. “This is captain Tico speaking. We will be landing in approximately thirty minutes. You have 15 minutes to put your clothes back on and brush your hair and teeth and make yourselves look like you haven’t been having sex for the last 6 hours. Then you have to come out here and fasten your seatbelts and tell us all about it.”
Steph let out a soft groan. “I hope he’s not like this for the next three months.”
“Don’t worry babe,” Jon said with a grin. “They’re all like that. Don’t be surprised if you get wake up calls at three am from people saying they’re the hotel front desk. Or people knocking at your door at 6 am saying they’re housekeeping. Actually, the housekeeping thing is mine. I tend to get up early and hit the gym a lot and always go looking for company.”
“Joy,” she groaned and went to bury her face in his pillow but was surprised to find herself burying her face in his naked chest instead. She sat up quickly. “How did I end up there?”
Jon chuckled softly, but was also slightly disappointed to be releasing her from his arms. “You fell asleep, and then moved. Who am I to deny a beautiful woman in my arms?”
She blushed, slightly embarrassed. “I’m sorry. And here we thought this bed was big enough for both of us.”
“Don’t be sorry,” he said, “You needed the sleep.”
“Ok,” she said, getting up and pulling a t-shirt on over her tank top and running the brush through her hair. She went to the bathroom and quickly brushed her teeth. She walked out to find Jon standing there with a grin on his face, wearing a pair of jean shorts and still topless.
“What? Did I get toothpaste on my shirt or something?”
“I hope not,” he said. “That’s my shirt. This is your shirt. We actually had this made for you. The shirt you had on when we left is in your bag. Remember you put it there before we went to sleep?”
“Oops,” she said blushing again. “I guess I was still half asleep when I got dressed.”
“It’s ok. It looks better on you than it does on me.” He said as she slid the t-shirt on over her head and was back to wearing just the camisole tank top and shorts again. “Come on. You can open this out there. Time to fasten our seatbelts and watch London as we land.”
They walked to out to catcalls and whistles. “Guys,” she said. “It’s way too early for this. But thanks for the shirt.”
“Open it,” David said. “We had it made just for you.”
“Ok,” she said opening the package. Inside was a soft black t-shirt with the circle tour logo on the front. It was no different than any of the other t-shirts she’d seen at the four concerts she’d gone to that year. “This is um, nice guys.” She said holding it up. Then she burst out laughing. On the back of the t-shirt was a picture of the four of them and a quote that said, “You’re just jealous because I hang with them.”
“You like?” Richie said sounding like a little kid.
“I love it,” she said. “I’ll wear with pride.”
She slipped it on over her camisole and found it fit perfectly.
“It looks fantastic on you,” Tico said. “My wife would be jealous to know we hang with such a hottie.”
Jon just sat back and quietly watched them joking around. He was feeling slightly jealous of the guys and all of the attention they were lavishing on his PA. Which was ridiculous. Everyone knew she worked for him. Besides David and Tico were happily married and Richie has a mystery woman back home. He pushed the jealous thoughts to the back of his mind. “We figured we needed the perfect gift to initiate you into our group.”
“This is definitely perfect,” she said smiling happily. Before she sat down to fasten her seatbelt, she walked up to each of them and kissed them gently on the cheek, going to Jon last.
“The t-shirt is a one of a kind,” he whispered into her ear, “Like you.” She blushed and sat down at the only empty seat which the guys had made sure was next to Jon.
The landing in London was a little bumpy making Steph a little nervous. She didn’t mind flying, but hated when it was a little bumpy. Jon could sense she was scared and reached his hand out to her. “Here. Squeeze my hand so you’re not so scared.”
She felt a hesitant.
“Steph,” Richie said, “You can grab Jon’s hand if you’re scared. Hell if you weren’t sitting next to him, you could’ve grabbed either one of our hands.”
“Yeah, and you know fully well I don’t bite unless asked,” Jon said softly.
“Ok,” she said softly and took his hand in hers and sat back and closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know you were afraid to fly,” Jon said softly, gently stroking her hand.
“I’m not,” she said, “Just afraid of a little turbulence.”
“Understood,” he said. “We’re almost down. Probably about 5 minutes.”
The real captain just came on. “I apologize for the turbulence lady and gentlemen. It appears the London fog is making it a little bumpy. We should be hitting the runway in about 3 minutes.”
“A little turbulence? The old wooden roller coaster at Six Flags in Massachusetts is less bumpy than this,” Steph said.
The guys just laughed. “Yeah and when you come off of one of those you’re all bruised. At least you’re not bruised up from this,” David pointed out.
The plane finally touched the ground, and stopped in the private area where Steph had instructed the pilot to land. Steph just stood up quickly and grabbed hers and Jon’s suitcases. Most of his things that he would need would already be at the hotel, but they had each packed two small bags just in case.
“Steph,” Jon said, “Let me take one of those.”
“Yeah,” David said, “Make Jonny use his muscles.”
“Guys, they’re light,” she said. “I don’t mind carrying bags. Besides, they have wheels and the car is right down those steps.”
“Ok,” the guys relented. As they got off the plane Steph smiled. She was in London. She hoped to at least be able to see some of the sights of all of the cities they were going to. Jon had said there’d be some down time in each city. She sure hoped so.
She got to the bottom of the steps and the driver took their bags and they headed to the hotel. Steph instructed the guys to wait in the car while she checked them in. She quickly checked everyone in and handed out room keys. They were all on the same floor as well as most of the crew that would be arriving shortly. Jon was in the presidential suite and Steph was in the adjoining room per his request.
The guys all went to their rooms and Steph opened the door to her and was amazed at the view from the hotel. They were on the top floor of course and the views of London looked positively spectacular. She stepped out on to the balcony and breathed in the fresh air. The fog had lifted and the sun was shining. It was going to be a beautiful day. She smiled happily. She didn’t realize that a pair of eyes was watching her from the adjoining balcony. Yes even the balconies had a little gate connecting them. Jon walked over and tapped her on the shoulder causing her to jump a mile.
“Sorry,” he said, “Didn’t mean to scare you. I thought maybe you’d want to grab lunch with me out there before we have to be at the arena.”
“Sure,” she said. “Should I change?”
“Nah, I thought we might run and grab a bite and sit down in a little park over near Big Ben.”
“Sweet. Do you need me to call a car?”
“Nah,” he said again, “I figured it would be a good day for a walk around the city. But let’s get going before the guys all decide they want to go for a walk too.”
“Ok,” she said, grabbing her bag.
They got on the elevator and walked outside. Jon led the way as he knew London well. They walked by the venue as it was on the way, where they saw some people waiting in line trying to get last minute tickets for the show. Jon lowered his head and the brim of his baseball cap as they walked. Once they got past the venue, they walked by a small girl about 10 years old crying.
They stopped and knelt down to the little girl. “What’s the matter sweetie?” Jon said to her.
The little girl crying sniffled. “I’ve been working hard delivering papers and walking dogs for one whole year now, and I wanted to buy mommy the perfect present. But they’re sold out. It’s just me and her and she can’t afford the tickets because she wants me to have a good education.” She pointed at the big Bon Jovi sign in the marquis at the arena. The little girl’s close looked old and there was a rip in her jeans. “I just wanted my mommy to have a good time tonight. Jon Bon Jovi is her favorite musician. Mine too, but I only had enough for one ticket, and just enough for Mommy to pay my baby sitter and the concert was sold out.”
Jon gave Steph a look, and she dug out her cell and called the arena asking them to put two tickets on hold for Jon and some special guests. He then slowly took off his hat and sunglasses. “I think your Mommy is doing the right thing by getting your education. Why don’t you hold on to your concert ticket money and go shopping with Mommy for a new outfit to wear for the concert tonight?” he said to her with a smile. “My good friend Steph here will meet you right around that corner by the back door at six with extra special tickets for you and your Mommy. What do you say to that?”
The little girl’s eyes grew big with recognition as Jon slipped back on the hat and sunglasses and held up a finger to his lips for her to be quiet.
“It’ll be our secret.”
“What’s your name?” he asked her.
“Angela,” she said and “Mommy’s name is Daphne.”
Steph reached into her bag and found a copy of the circle album. She carried all sorts of things on her at all times just in case. She handed the CD to Jon along with a pen. Jon quickly autographed the CD and told her to run home to her mother.
“We live right across the street and down some. Mommy was hoping to hear the show from our apartment since it was outside. Thank you so much!” Little Angela hugged Jon tight.
“Before you go home,” he said, “What’s your favorite song Angela?”
“Me and Mommy both love When We Were Beautiful,” she said.
“Ok,” He said lowering his shades and giving her a wink. “We’ll see you tonight.”
The little girl ran off clutching her CD excited. “You’re amazing,” Steph said. “You could have easily been recognized.”
“I don’t care. It was worth it. I probably made the poor little girl’s year. Where are there seats?”
“Front row, center. Right next to me.”
“Good,” he said. “Let’s go.”
They continued walking and Jon found a little deli that he was familiar with. He walked in and they ordered sandwiches and went and found the park and sat down and had lunch. Steph looked out and saw Big Ben.
“London is really beautiful,” she said.
“Yes it is. Thank you for joining me for lunch. It sure beats room service from the hotel.”
“So are you going to dedicate that song to Angela and her mom?”
“I think so. She reminded me of the spirit of giving. It should not just be at Christmas time. A few weeks ago I probably would’ve just autographed a CD for her and sent her on her way. But I’m slowly starting to open my heart to the world again. I’ve been so bitter about things for so long. I know Dot and I haven’t signed the papers yet, but that’s only a matter of time. I feel like such a failure because of my marriage, and part of me will always wish that I had been able to keep it alive.”
“Sometimes things aren’t meant to be forever. And when you’re young and in love, you’re blinded by that love and it’s hard to see that it won’t be forever,” Steph said gently. “That doesn’t mean that it wasn’t just as important to her as it was to you. She’s probably feeling like just as much of a failure as you do. But neither one of you are. You just weren’t meant to be forever. You’re only a failure if you let this cripple your ability to open up and love again.”
“Like you?” he asked gently.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You clearly are coming off of a bad breakup. I’m just saying you should follow some of your own advice.”
“My situation is completely different than yours. It is brand new still and there is a lot more to my situation than two people who fell out of love with each other,” she was starting to feel a little angry.
“Maybe if you’d open up to me, I could give you some good advice on the situation.”
“Jon, please don’t push,” she said angrily getting up to walk away. “When I’m ready to open up to you and tell you what happened, I will. We should really get back. I have to make sure the backstage area has everything you guys need for tonight and you have sound check.” She started walking really fast. He was bringing up wounds for her and pushing to find out about her past, and she just wasn’t ready to deal with it. Her past is why she ran to New York as fast as she could.
Jon hurried to catch up to her, and fell in next to her. “I’m sorry,” he said softly after a few minutes. “I shouldn’t have pushed. It’s just you’re clearly upset about whatever this guy did to you, and I want to know so I can be a friend to you, and help you. I allowed you in and feel like a whole new man already because of it. I just wish you would let me in.”
She had been walking with her head down and had silent tears rolling down her cheeks. She was angry with herself for having gotten so upset with him when all he was trying to do was help. She just kept walking praying he wouldn’t notice.
“Ok, so you’re not going to say anything, would you at least stop and look at me? I’m really sorry. I won’t push again until you’re ready.”
She finally stopped and looked at him, with tear filled eyes that nearly broke his heart to see. He opened his arms wide, and she fell into his embrace. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I promise I won’t be such a mess. Can you promise not to ask me about what happened to me in my past? I still need to process the situation and realize I’m better off away from it before I can actually open up and talk about it.”
“Ok,” he said his arms still wrapped around her in the middle of the street. “I promise to let it go.” She gently pulled herself out of his embrace and took his hand.
“Thank you for being such a great friend, and so understanding,” she said.
“You’re welcome,” he said softly. “Just remember. I may be your boss, but am always here for you to talk to. I want us to be great friends.” And maybe more eventually. When you’re ready, he thought. They walked back to the hotel hand in hand each smiling. Steph because for the first time in a long time, she felt as though she had someone who she could trust to keep her safe and Jon, because he was holding her hand and didn’t want to let go.
They arrived back at the hotel and showered and dressed for the concert that night. Steph dressed in a jean skirt and put on her new Jovi t-shirt from the guys. She took her long wavy hair and tied it up with a few lose curls framing her face. She wore a pair of black strappy sandals on her feet. She put on a touch of eye makeup to bring out her big brown eyes and little bit of vanilla scented lip gloss and grabbed her bag and phone and headed downstairs to meet the guys. She ended up meeting Tico and Dave on the elevator. Jon and Richie had sent a text that they’d be down in 2 minutes. They had been discussing set lists for the evening.
“Woo hoo!” David said, “She’s got our shirt on. You luck hot tonight!”
“Thanks boys! Don’t get to used to the get up though. We have 10 nights here,” she said.
“Good. Then we expect something different every night,” Tico said.
“You’ll have to make me some more t-shirts,” she said laughing.
They walked outside and the car was waiting for them. They climbed in and Steph called the arena to say they’d be there in five minutes. She was told that everything was ready for them. A few minutes later Jon and Richie climbed in, all decked out in rock star mode.
Jon wore a royal blue short sleeve shirt that showed off his superman tattoo and his muscles. The shirt was slightly unbuttoned and he wore tight black jeans that showed off his perfect ass. Richie had on his black sleeveless leather vest and jeans, and the cowboy hat.
Steph whistled. “Ok, now I’m a little excited to be seeing you in rock star mode. I almost forgot how hot you two look together on that stage.”
“Don’t go groupie mode on us yet,” Richie winked. “Not until we’re on stage.”
“No chance in hell of that honey,” she replied. “Too much work for the PA to do prior to the show.”
They pulled up around the back entrance to the arena, where the O2 security was waiting to escort them in. He introduced himself as Paul and handed out the VIP passes to Steph, as well as her ticket and the two tickets she had requested earlier in the day. They walked around and showed everyone around the backstage area. Jon’s changing area was all set to go for him. There was a small cooler with bottled water and beer on ice for him. He always liked to have at least one during a show. There was spread just outside of the changing area with plenty of munchies for the guys to snack on beforehand, and all of their equipment was set and ready to go.
“Steph,” David said grabbing a piece of bread and making a sandwich, “You did good work getting this all set for us.”
“Yup,” Jon said, “Now it’s your job to enjoy sound check and then to make sure I’m ready to go when the lights go out for Last Man Standing. Then you can enjoy the show. There will be two sets of encores tonight guys. Steph, when we go off stage after the first set, I want you go head back stage so that we’re already to get right out of here afterwards.. You can watch encore from the wings here. He gestured to a spot that was on the stage, but right where they would be walking on and off in the back. It was dark enough that she wouldn’t be seen.
“Ok.” She said, “I explained to the driver that we would be between 1130 and midnight. I’ll call when you guys run off for the second encore.”
“Perfect,” he said. “Do you have that list I gave you in the car?”
“I do,” she said eyes twinkling.
“Did you add some of your favorites?”
“Nope,” she replied. “It’s perfect just the way it is. We have 10 nights here. You’ll probably hit all of my favorites by the time we’re done.”
He grinned, and looked at the boys, “Ok guys, sound check. Steph, please take your seat right in the front row. Mind you, you have permission to move anywhere you’d like in the pit. Which means when I get ready to come out on the circle, you can move. So your t-shirt will really live up to its name with all of the fans tonight.”
Steph took her seat and watched as the boys went through about 8 songs. It felt like having her own private concert. Then she looked at her watch and walked over to security. It was time to let the fan club contest winners and the radio contest winners in. The guys stopped what they were doing, and Jon grabbed a bottle of water, while escorted the contest winners down. The plan for them was to do 2 songs and then run off so they could open the gates for the public and the opening band, “Train,” could come on. They went through two fan favorites for the sound check, and thanked everyone for coming. One of the fans came up to Steph. “Can we buy one of those shirts?”
“Sorry,” she said, “It’s a one of a kind.”
“Darn,” she said. “I so wanted one. How are you in here? Did you win a contest? I see you have VIP access.”
Jon was peeking from back stage and he noticed Steph being held up by a fan. He smiled. Her first experience being on the other side and she was smiling like a star already.
“I work for one of the guys. Am a PA,” she said with a smile. “I do have to get going. Have some last minute details to attend to before tonight.”
“Wow….who do you work for?” the girl asked, pushing.
“it’s more like all of them. But really, I have to get going. I’ll be out here in the pit during the show, so maybe I’ll talk to you then.”
“Oh, ok,” the girl said, as the doors were opened for the public, Steph ran backstage and found the guys laughing.
“Steph has her first fan,” Jon said with a grin.
“Stalker is more like it,” she muttered. “I have to run and let our special guests in.”
“Yeah,” Richie said, “Jon told us about the little girl you guys met this afternoon.”
“She’s such a doll,” Steph yelled over her shoulder as she walked back to where the back entrance was. She opened the door and found Angela and her mom Daphne there.
“Hi kid,” she said smiling, “Remember me?”
“Yup,” she said happily. “My mommy didn’t believe the Jon himself autographed the CD for us.”
“Hi,” Steph said holding out her hand, “I’m Steph, Jon’s PA and you’re Daphne, correct?”
“Yes,” her mother said near tears, “Thank you so much for this tonight. Things are so hard for us and poor little Angie wanted to get me to this concert so badly. I told her it would probably be sold out, but she insisted on trying.”
“Come on,” Steph said. “Follow me. There’s a few guys that want to meet this little lady. And they have presents for both of you.. Although I see Angie got a new pair of jeans today.”
“Mommy insisted we spend the money on stuff for me, but I made her buy a cute pair of jeans for tonight too.”
Steph led them down the hallway to where the boys were joking and laughing.
“Boys will be boys,” she said. “Ahem, we have visitors guys.”
The guys stopped and turned around. “Hi!” Richie spoke, “You must be the little girl that tried so hard to get our concert tickets. I hear you’re my biggest fan.”
“No,” Angie said matter of factly. “My mommy is Jon’s biggest fan, and I’m Tico’s. I want to learn to play the drums.”
The rest of the band and Steph and Daphne all choked back a laugh.
“Actually, I’m probably the biggest fan of all of you guys,” Daphne said. “Especially today. Thank you for making my daughter’s dreams come true.”
“We’re not done yet,” Jon said. “We actually have a couple of small gifts from us.” He handed them each a circle tour t-shirt almost identical to Steph’s only it just had the picture of the guys on the back. They were just autographed by all of the guys.
“And,” Tico said, “For the little girl who likes to play drums, a pair of my personal drumsticks.”
“Wow,” Angela said, “Now all I need to save for a drum set.”
Richie handed Daphne one of his guitar picks. “In case she changes her mind on the whole drum thing.”
Everyone laughed, as Train finished up Hey Soul Sister and they announced that the band would be coming on soon.
“Alright Daphne and Angela,” Steph said. “What do you two ladies say I get you both to your seats? Jon and the guys need to get ready to go on stage now.”  She motioned for Paul to come over, as Angela and Daphne hugged every one and thanked them for everything again. Paul directed the girls to their seats and Steph walked over to Jon’s room. He looked ready to go calmly finishing off a bottle of water.
“Your small towels are set up on stage for you.”
“Good now walk down with me,” he said. The lights had just dimmed and there was screaming all around them as they walked down to the back area of the stage and found the platform where he would come out on for the first song. The platform would stretch all the way to the circle where he’d jump on stage. The opening chords to Last Man Standing began and Steph smiled with pride as she watched the crowd look in anticipation for him. She could hear the guys play and see the lights come on each of them one by one with the last spot light on Richie in an opening guitar solo that was a little longer than need be while waiting for Jon to get one there. He looked at her grinned and pulled her to him and gave her a peck on the lips. “I needed that for luck!” he yelled grabbing the mike, and starting to sing, “Come see a little raining spectacle….”
Steph ran for her seat in the front excited. She managed to make it before the end of the song and stood up as he the platform reached the circle and Jon jumped off and ran around to the front of the stage.
“Take your seats now, folks. It's show time.
Hey, Patrick hit the lights
There's something in the air
There's magic in the night
Now here's the band, they really play
I'll count the first one in
I don't know where it's going
We all know where it's been…”
They continued the song and went into the next song. Not one member of the audience was sitting down from what Steph could see. The two most excited people were the two standing next to her. Jon looked down at them and winked.
“This ain’t a song for the broken hearted….” He went into It’s My Life causing everyone to erupt in more screaming. At the end of the song, Jon yelled out, “Are you with me London! If there were a roof here, we’d blow top off tonight! Just the other day I took a shot right through the head, but more importantly, right through the heart, sing it guys!” He held out the microphone to the audience.
“Shot through the heart and you’re to blame. You give love a bad name. I play my part and you play your game, you give love a bad name.”
They sang the whole song and Steph had the Jovi fist pump thing going and then he went into the next song.
“We got it. Going on. Is there anybody out there looking for a party. Shake your money maker. Baby smoke it if you got it.”
They did all of we got it going on and Jon shushed the audience to slow it down.
“There’s something about you, I want to rescue….” He finished superman tonight and found himself staring at Steph through the whole song. She looked almost teary eyed as he looked into her eyes through the song.
“Alright, everyone. Recently I made friends with a beautiful woman which is not unusual for me, but what is unusual was her ability to make me remember why it is I love to give so much. So thank you Stephanie. Today we met an incredible child who was just trying to get tickets for the show tonight. She had worked hard all year and wanted to buy her mom one ticket for tonight. Well thanks to Steph, the two of them are sitting with her right in the front row, and this next song is for them. I hear it’s your favorite, Angela and Daphne.”
The band went into When We Were Beautiful, and then picked it back up a notch for Work For the Working Man. It was time for Jon’s break, as he handed the reigns over to Richie for I’ll be There For You and Lay Your Hands on Me.
Steph ran back stage and met Jon. “Jon, that was incredible.”
“I have a few more tricks up my sleeve baby. You ain’t seen nothing yet.”
She handed him a cold bottle of water, and wiped some sweat off him so he could change into dry clothing. He swapped out the blue shirt for a red sleeveless button up, and left it unbuttoned a little more than halfway down. He flashed that grin of his at her again. “Richie is almost done. You might want to get back out there and get near the front of the pit. I want you to really enjoy the next couple.”
She smiled, “Ok.”
“Wait!”
“Yes Jon,” she turned around, as he pulled her into another quick kiss.
“Sorry, I always need a beautiful woman to kiss before I go onstage,” he said with a wink. She shook her head laughing at him.
She went and found Paul who took her to Angela and Daphne and then brought them around to the front of the circle.
Richie finished his song and Jon came back out and walked around to the center of the circle.
“So I asked a good friend of mine what their favorite song was that we do, and to my utmost disgust, it was not a Bon Jovi song. However that quickly turned into sheer happiness when my friend told me what song it was. It’s called Hallelujah and it is one of my favorites to perform. Since my friend happens to be in the audience tonight, this one is for you.”
“Well I’ve heard there was a secret chord that David played and pleased the Lord, But you don’t really care for music, do yah…”
Steph wept as he sang the rest of the song. This was truly the first time she found herself so enamored by one of their shows. Maybe it was because she knew them all now. She felt a tugging at her hand, and smiled down at Angela.
“Is this song for you?” she asked.
She looked at Daphne who nodded as she bent down and picked up Angela, “I think so sweetie. I think so.”
The next song, Jon had Richie come out for and they went into Always, followed by You Want to Make a Memory, with all of the guys out there, sitting on stools. Jon sang with so much emotion and the crowd just ate it right up cheering along with each song. He stood up and ran back around, as Paul came over and escorted them back to their seats. He then broke into Have a Nice Day, followed by Feels Something Like Summertime, Something for the Pain and Bad Medicine.
When that was done, he yelled thank you to the crowd and the lights dimmed as the crowd cheered. Steph had no clue how long each set would be for the two encores, but was really looking forward to watching. All of a sudden spot lights came back on and Jon’s voice shouted.
“Well who says you can’t go home!” She had known what most of the set list was with the exception of the three songs in the circle and the encore set. Who says you can’t go home, they broke into Whole Lotta Leavin’ Going On, and then In These Arms Tonight, before running off stage again. Steph hugged Angela and Daphne goodbye and offered to have tickets at the will call box for the remaining shows. They wouldn’t be the front row, but would still be just as good. Daphne thanked her, and Steph politely instructed them to wait there as they were not finished yet.
Steph ran back and hugged the guys. “The show was spectacular guys!”
“Quick,” Richie yelled, “We have Living on a Prayer and Dead or Alive for the last two songs, but want one more for the second encore. What’ll it be?”
She only hesitated for a second, “Bed of Roses.”
“You heard the lady!” Jon yelled “Let’s go finish the night.” David ran back out to the keyboard, and started playing the piano for Bed of Roses and Richie and Tico ran out. Steph just stood in the wings watching eagerly. It was the first time she ever heard that song live. Jon ran over and threw his arms around her.
“Jon,” she said with a smile, “You smell.”
“Right back at you,” he said giving her yet another friendly peck on the lips and ran back out there and sat next to David at the piano, “Sitting here wasted and wounded  at this old piano…” Since he was sitting down for this one, he was able to watch Steph through the whole song.
Steph felt a little confused with all of the kissing. She had told him she wasn’t ready for this yet and then he just kept kissing her tonight when no one was watching. Maybe he always kissed his wife before a show or his kids, and doesn’t have anyone to kiss so he just chose me. Who knows?

Chapter 5

The next few weeks passed like a whirlwind getting ready to go to Europe. There were a ton of meetings to go to, and soon it was time to fly out. Steph and Jon met the rest of the band and they boarded the Jovi jet. It was going to be a 10 hour flight. Upon boarding the plane Steph looked around. It was not a normal plane. There were plush couches for seating, and a private area for them to sleep if need be. There was a small kitchen area.
"Alright woman, what are you going to cook for us?" Richie said once they took off.
"Me?" Steph replied. "Who told you I cook?"
"Kidd over here says you've been a wiz in his kitchen over the last couple of weeks."
"Richie," Jon said, "It's 5 am...can't we wait a little bit for breakfast?"
"I suppose. I just thought it would be good to have some real food for a change. Instead of the cardboard I've been eating."
Steph laughed. "Just give me a few to respond to some of these emails and I'll get breakfast started."
"All work and no play..." Tico chimed in.
"She makes it so all I have to do is show up and look pretty," Jon said. "I'm getting used to this spoiled treatment of actually enjoying the meetings. Hopefully she'll relax a little in Europe."
"No chance in hell guys," Steph said. "There's too much to do."
"Have you called your sister about the last show in Lisbon yet?" Jon asked.
"Not yet. Although she's going to freak when she finds out I'm working for you. She thinks you're a god."
"Damn! I got the wrong sister," Jon said. "I want the one that thinks I'm a god."
Richie snorted. "Jonny there are so many women out there that think you're a god. You're lucky you got one that keeps you grounded."
"Alright guys, if I'm going to get any kind of relaxation at all on this flight, I have to finish these emails, and keep my job at making Jon look like a god." She winked at them, as Jon picked up a pillow and tossed it at her. She got up and walked behind the door of the private area of the plane. She couldn't hear any voices and was pleasantly surprised to discover it was soundproof. Peace at last. She started working.
"So Jonny," Richie said once she was all settled in and working, "Did you fuck her yet?"
Jon rolled his eyes at them. "Please there is way more to her than that."
"That's a no guys. This is a new record for Jonny. He's around the most beautiful creature for two weeks and nothing," Richie said with a teasing grin.
Jon just crossed his arms and glared at Richie.
"I don't think we should go there man," David said. "Somehow I think this one is different. She may even be the one to help him when the divorce comes."
"Guys," Jon said, exasperated. "Steph and I are just friends and she works for me. There is nothing going on. She's a fantastic girl."
"Yup," Tico said, "She's under your skin."
Jon sighed. His brothers knew him too well. "Yeah, well, I guess so. But I've got to take things slow with her. She's not ready for my level of intensity."
"Bad breakup?" Richie asked.
"That's what she told me that first night we took you out to dinner when we got back to the apartment. We both got a little drunk and there was fooling around, but she came to her senses and said she wasn't ready. She also said she wanted to be. Nothing has happened since."
"Well we have three months of being over here. A lot can happen in three months," Richie pointed out.
"We'll see," Jon said.
Steph came out a little while later. "Ok boys, work is all done. Who wants breakfast?"
"I do!" 4 voices echoed in unison.
"Ok," Steph walked over to the kitchen and looked around. She found bread, eggs, cheese, cinnamon and vanilla, and bacon. She got started on making french toast, scrambled eggs and cheese, and bacon.
Jon came up behind her and casually wrapped an arm around her waist. "We do have an in flight cook you know..."
"Now you tell me."
"I'm just teasing. Do you need any help?"
"Nope," she replied. "You guys relax and enjoy the flight. It's the last bit of relaxing you'll do before the concerts start. I'm looking forward to seeing you guys up on that stage."
"Yup. during the time we're performing is the time that you actually get to relax."
"And you'll be working hard up there. I must say its going to feel weird at a concert without my big sister, and doing the Jovi fist pumping."
Jon just raised his eyebrows. "You guys were groupies?"
"No." she replied. "My sister was a groupie. I just got caught up in all of her excitement."
"I see," Jon said. "Well, I think it'll be great to watch you excited over my shows."
Seeing the breakfast was almost ready, Jon reached up and grabbed some plates.
"I  thought I told you to relax," she said.

"Can't help it. It's been weird not feeling like so much of a workaholic."
"Ok," she replied, "Since you're here," she dished up a couple of plates. "Take these over to the guys."
He did as she asked. She finished dishing up the breakfast and handed the guys their plates. Then she brought out a large pot of coffee, and juice for everyone, and loaded the dishes into the dishwasher and walked over and sat next to David and Richie. She figured that was safer than sitting with Jon.
"How is everything guys?"
Richie paused in mid bite. "You're cooking breakfast for me every day. Especially if you don't end up with Jonny. I expect breakfast in bed."

Chapter 4

Dinner went fabulous. They ended up at a nice little Italian restaurant chosen by Richie. By the end of the night Steph felt right at home with the guys in the band. It was clear that everyone approved of her as everyone hugged good bye. Since Steph and Jon were the only ones headed back to the city, David opted to drive Richie back to rehab and Tico back to his place.
During the drive back to the city, Steph was quiet. She couldn’t believe what a whirlwind few days it had been. Within twenty four hours her life had completely changed. She already loved working for Jon and the rest of the band members were fantastic.
“You’re awfully quiet,” Jon spoke up about halfway back.
“I’m just thinking,” she said softly. “This is such an amazing opportunity.”
“Well, the guys absolutely loved you. I think you’re officially a part of our family now.”
“Which means?” she asked.
“Which means I could never fire you, even if I wanted to. You’re here to stay. The guys would have a fit if I ever sent you away.”
Steph just laughed.  “So I’m in then.”
“Yes you are my lady.”
They arrived back at the apartment a short time later, and changed into comfortable clothes. John wore a pair of flannel pj bottoms and a t-shirt while Steph wore shorts and a tank top.
“So,” Jon said once they got inside, “What’s on my agenda for tomorrow?”
“You have nothing scheduled for the weekend,” she replied.
“Sweet,” he said happily. “Want to watch a movie? You can go through the collection and pick whatever you want.” He leaned back on the couch and reached for a remote and pressed a button revealing a large movie screen and two doors next to it opened up revealing the movie collection. “Don’t worry they’re all in order.”
“Show off,” she said, “It looks like block buster video in here.”
Jon just laughed. “Well check out the new releases section. I may have some that aren’t even out in the theater yet.”
She looked at the wall with a New Releases label, and looked through the DVDs, and movie canisters. Pausing at one, she started jumping up and down, excited.
Jon just gave her an amused grin. “Find something you want to see?”
“Hell yes! I can’t believe you have a copy of this. It’s not even supposed to be out in theaters until November.” She held up a copy of the new Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn.
“I just got that in a few days ago. I have a guy in Hollywood that always gets me the new stuff before it comes out. I am actually a closeted Twilight buff. And if you ever tell the guys that, I may have to break my rule of not firing you.”
Steph grinned. “You’re secret is safe with me. But before we start the movie, I’ll get us snacks.”
“I can do that,” Jon offered.
“Nonsense. It’s my job to make sure you’re taken care of.  Now tell me what you’re favorite movie snacks are.”
“Surprise me. The kitchen is loaded with snacks and I love to snack during a good movie.”
“Do you want an adult beverage or soda?”
“Adult beverage by all means.”
Steph went into the big kitchen and found popcorn and m & ms and a bag of mini reeses peanut butter cups. She spread out the candy on a tray and poured the popcorn into a bowl. Next she scoped out the bar and found all of the ingredients to make her best friends specialty drink. She and her best friend had waited tables and bartended together for three years. Her best friend invented the perfect drink that tasted like Hawaiian punch. She made a little pitcher of them and set that and two glasses on the tray and carried everything out to the living room, and set everything down on the coffee table.
Jon whistled. “Wow , this is a nice spread you got here. What’s in the pitcher? Jungle juice?”
“Ha!” She laughed. “It’s better than jungle juice.  Try some.” She poured them each a glass and debated whether or not to sit on the giant couch next to him or in the chase lounge.
“You can sit with me,” Jon said watching her. “I promise I won’t bite unless you ask me to.”
She smiled and sat down next to him as Jon sipped his drink. “Ok, either there is no alcohol in this stuff or it is positively lethal.”
“You like?” she asked with a grin.
“I do. You have to tell me what’s in it.”
“Nope. Trade secret. However, I can tell you that it is positively lethal.”
He chuckled softly. He clicked the remote and the lights all dimmed and the previews started. It was like being in your own private movie theater. “Wait, I can fast forward too,” he whispered to her, clicking a button on the remote to fast forward through the previews.
“Again,” she whispered back as the opening credits came on, “Show off.”
The movie came on and Jon and Steph sat in silence quietly munching on snacks and sipping their drinks. The movie definitely was not a disappointment to Steph who had read all four of the books in a week. She couldn’t wait to tell her best friend Katie back home that she had seen this already. Katie would probably kill her if she knew she saw the movie without her. Oh well, they could always watch it again. About halfway into the movie Jon was starting to feel the effects of those drinks. He looked over at Steph and wondered if he could get away with putting his arm around her. He decided to try a move that was considered an oldie but a goody. He gave a big yawn and stretched his arms out, gently resting one on the couch behind her.
“Is the movie  putting you to sleep?” Steph whispered at him.
“No,” he replied, “But the drinks might be.” Jon reached for the bowl of popcorn with his free arm and set it between them. He watched her as she reached for some about five minutes later. He decided to do the same. His hands slowly brushed hers as they reached for the popcorn together. She felt a jolt of electricity run through her veins as their hands touched.  He too felt surprised at what he felt when he touched her hand. This girl was smart, beautiful, funny, and feisty. Somehow he didn’t think he’d be able to control himself for very long with her. He looked over at her, and gently lowered the arm that was on the couch so it his hand was resting on her shoulder.  She too was feeling the effects of the alcohol. It felt good to have a strong man’s arms around her. Even if it was her new boss. She gave a contented sigh and rested her head against his shoulder causing him to put his arm around her a little tighter.
Shit, she thought to herself. How buzzed are you? She took another sip of her drink. Oh well, if anything happens tonight I can blame the alcohol. It feels way too good being here.
“Comfy?” he whispered. “I know I am.”
“Hmm.” She said. “Definitely.” She stretched her legs out and laid back with her head resting on his chest. He set the popcorn down and decided that the movie had definitely been a great idea. He took his other arm and wrapped it around her as well. He also found himself thankful that Dot and the kids were off at the shore house for the weekend.  Even though his marriage was technically over, the kids didn’t know that yet. Not that they were kids anymore.  They were all teenagers. Hell, Cassandra and Jesse were 20 and 21. The movie ended with a cliff hanger. Jon knew this and figured Steph did too. As the credits rolled Steph smiled happily.
“So far, the best Twilight I’ve seen,” she said content to be laying in his arms.
“I’m glad you liked it,” he said softly. “I definitely enjoyed it.”
She started to sit up, and realized she felt a little wobbly. Probably from the alcohol and the effect he was having on her. He noticed and chuckled. “Serves you right for trying to get up. I was perfectly content to keep you here.” He reached for her and pulled her back against him.
“But, someone should clean up-“ She protested, realizing she was losing the battle fast.
“We finished the pitcher. Fantastic drinks by the way. And the m & ms and peanut butter cups are in bags and the popcorn is in a bowl with a lid. I think that can wait, don’t you?” He gently turned her around in his arms so she was facing him and their lips were just inches apart.
“I guess so,” she said softly wanting to lean forward and kiss those lips of his.
As if reading her mind, Jon spoke, “It’s ok. You can bite if you want to. I know I want you to.”
She gently lifted her arms up and around him, and leaned in and softly brushed her lips against his. He opened his mouth slightly allowing her access to stick her  tongue in his mouth.  The kiss lasted for what seemed like hours. Jon reached his hands up and slowly massaged her back as they kissed. When they broke apart it was only to catch a moment for air before they went back to hungrily tasting each other. They both tasted of chocolate and those fruity drinks.  He definitely didn’t want to stop kissing her, as this was absolutely perfect. His hands slowly made their way down her back and came around to her front side. She let out a little moan as one hand reached over and gently grazed her soft breasts. The other hand reached is way south, and he gently slid his finger inside the crevice of her shorts and found her quickly and expertly touched her area which was already wet in anticipation of his touch. She let out another soft moan, letting him know that she wanted to take this further. The hand that was lazily circling her breasts stopped what it was doing to gently slide off her shorts. He pulled away from kissing her long enough to look at her laying on top of him.
“Bedroom?” he asked with a ragged breath glancing down at her wet area, which looked more beautiful than he had imagined.
She tried to tell herself it was a bad idea getting involved with him so quickly, and he sensed her hesitation, and definitely didn’t want that. He expertly slid two fingers inside of her causing her to lose all thoughts of it being a bad idea. “Yes, “ she breathed as he kept ducking his fingers in and out of her, teasing her.  That was all he needed to hear. He gently lifted her up and carried her across the hallways of the apartment  and laid her down on his bed.
“Jon,” she breathed. The time it took him to carry her to the caused some of her resolve to come back. “While I’m enjoying what we were doing down there, I’m not so sure we should let it go that far yet…”
He gently crawled into the bed next to her and put his arms around her.  She could feel his hardness pressing against her, and instantly felt bad that she had turned him on only to turn him down. He leaned in and spoke softly in her ear. “It’s ok. I can wait.”
“Seriously?” she asked rolling over to face him. “You don’t feel like I was being a tease for wanting to wait.”
“You wanting to wait is better than where we were at a day ago. You insisted we were a bad idea then. So yes, I can wait for you my little one. I don’t want to do this anyway with you being drunk the first time.”
“I’m not drunk. Well not now anyway,” she said. “The buzz is wearing off. Although, by the end of the movie I was feeling pretty damn good. I still want to wait though. I mean, we barely know each other, and you are my boss, and married too…”
He wrapped his arms tighter around her. “Ok, apparently I’m going to have to do some convincing here. Because it sounds like your resolve that we shouldn’t get involved is back. I don’t know about you, but I felt an instant connection from the moment you smiled at me on the elevator. As far as me being your boss, we can easily keep things on the dl for a little while if that’s what you want. I want to get to know you better and it’ll actually be great for your job to get to know me better and I don’t mean on a sexual level. Although that would be a job with excellent fringe benefits,” He paused to flash a grin at her. “AAs far as me being married, we’ve talked about my situation. In fact, I’m pretty sure Dot has a man on the side.  I think she’s just waiting for me to find someone before she tells me she wants the divorce to happen sooner rather than later. And if it turns out that we don’t work out, I promise I won’t fire you. Or, I’ll give you to Richie. He’s been wanting to get a PA for a long time now. Richie lives on the west coast most of the time, so if we didn’t work out, you wouldn’t have to see my ugly face. So there, I’ve argued all of your points, and I think I’ve done a damn fine job.” He took his head and propped it up with hand and looked at her with a hopeful boyish look.
“You did a fine job arguing my points. Except if we didn’t work out, I’d expect you to stay professional with me, and not turn me over to Richie. Not that Richie isn’t amazing. I just don’t think I’m the right fit to be his PA,” she said.
He chuckled softly, “Yeah, you’re too sweet for him. I need the sweet girl on my side.”
“Hey, I think I’ve proven I’m not all sweet and innocent!” she protested.
“I suppose,” he said leaning in to nibble her neck. “You taste sweet from every part of you I’ve tasted. So? Will you give this thing a whirl with me?”
“Jon, honestly,” she said, “How can one focus on giving the right answer with you doing that?”
He pulled back. “Ok baby. I’m all yours. Now bring up another point.”
She sighed. She wanted to try with him. But her past history was not exactly stellar. And part of the reason for taking this job was because she had been coming off a very bad relationship. But she couldn’t tell him that. “To tell you the honest truth, I don’t think I’m ready to try.” She thought about the things she had been through with her ex, and felt herself get a little teary eyed.
All of a sudden he realized that it wasn’t him. It was her. And it made him want her more. And it made him want to protect her from whatever had so clearly hurt her in the past.
“Ok,” he said, not wanting to push her. “How about we at least try to be friends? I’d like to get to know you and maybe when you get to the point where you’re ready, we can try to see where this could go. I’m a very patient man Stephanie. I’ll wait for you. I’m pretty sure that you’re worth waiting for.”
“We can definitely be friends,” she whispered softly wishing she were ready for more than that. “I should probably get to my own bed now.”
“Don’t go,” Jon said softly. “I’m not saying that something will happen. Because I can guarantee you that unless you say the word I will behave myself. Can friends hold each other?”
She smiled. “I suppose.”
“Good.” He pulled her close to him and she snuggled against him and fell sound asleep.
